The captain laughed. “Oh, I forget. You pirates don’t like to talk about your past lives.”The appellation infuriated Navarre and he whirled on her, shaking his finger to make his point. “I am not a pirate. I do not pillage my neighbors for my own profit. I am the sheriff of this small town, dedicating myself to offering some small measure of security to those who live here.”Braddock puffed herself up and retorted, “This whole town only exists because pirates need a place to repair their ships and barter their goods.”
