Kate has been raised in isolation on a small farm near Long Tree, Ontario. When the doctor who raised her suddenly goes missing, she is tasked with a directive that will take her clear across the country. Leaving the relative safety and isolation of the only home she's ever known proves harder than she thinks, though, and it is only when she stumbles over a dead body that she is prodded into action. Johnny Stinson, an ex-con who has been down on his luck nearly his entire life, accepts a lucrative job that leads him to that same farm near Long Tree, that same dead body, and a hysterical Kate. Getting away from the mayhem before anyone inadvertently ties him to the murder becomes his first priority, and kidnapping Kate somehow seems like his only option. Mack Delaney is the Vancouver Police Department's newly appointed Superintendent of Investigative Services. He's in a hurry to solve two Vancouver murders when he receives a call from the Ontario Provincial Police, linking his murders to their missing doctor - and the discovery of another dead body. With a murderer still on the loose, Kate and Johnny and Mack are all caught up in the same nightmare. Unfortunately, none of them are even remotely on the same side.
